I’ve always been too intimidated to read Murakami because of the reviews (both laudatory and otherwise) and controversies I’ve read over the years. His work seem a bit too depressing (at least for these depressing times), and the critique that his portrayal of female characters is misogynistic has put me off even further. (On the latter, I’ve also read that the misogyny isn’t Murakami’s but the male protagonist’s, but it can be difficult to separate the two when the pattern seems to be fairly consistent from story to story.) Maybe I’ll try Norwegian Wood since you note that it was popular with Japanese women of a certain era. Is it a difficult read in the original Japanese?

There are some weird, non-human(?) sentences in this. Or maybe where halves of sentences got accidentally deleted.
